“Today is my one hundred and eleventh birthday! Alas, eleventy-one years is far too
short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits.”
– Bilbo Baggins

If there’s one thing hobbits know, it’s how to throw a birthday party. The hobbits have a good thing going, and they know the joy of simple pleasures like food, fun, and family. Since we humans don’t live in the Shire, we have to look just a bit more to find fun places to throw a birthday party.

The ten ideas here for birthday party fun are just the beginning. With a little creativity, you can have a fabulous party anywhere. The most important thing to remember is that you don’t have to “outdo” anyone – or yourself – to throw a memorable party. Think back to your childhood. A big box, your imagination, and a few friends led to hours of fun. Share that kind of simple joy with your kids to give them a moment they’ll remember forever.

10 unusual and fun places to throw a birthday party that will leave the kids elated and exhausted

1. Go to a farm

Spend your special day at a local farm. Celebrate a summer birthday petting goats, feeding pigs, and finding out what it feels like when a cow licks your arm. In the fall, visit a corn maze for a birthday adventure. If you feel especially brave, go through the maze at dusk!

2. Head to the water

Take a picnic to the beach or a lake and spend the day barbecuing, hunting for shells or rocks, and playing frisbee. Just save the cake for later if you’re in a sandy location. Sand and vanilla icing don’t go together very well!

3. Go to the park

Plan a game of wiffle ball, hide and seek, or follow the leader. Bring picnic supplies and enjoy a day in the sun. For added fun, plan a scavenger hunt. Look for leaves, insects, identify different trees, and challenge the kids to find four-leaf clovers.

4. See a movie

Even in the age of instant video, there is still something magical about the silver screen. Take in an age-appropriate film at the cinema then head to the park for snacks and a game of tag.

5. Get in touch with your inner animal at the zoo

Most zoos offer special birthday tours and educational experiences. Talk to your zoo about getting a behind the scenes tour, an opportunity to feed the giraffes, or an official guide to share tales of the primates.

6. Bounce around

All you have to do is show up and have fun! Bonus feature: the other parents will love you when their young party-goer falls asleep on their own at 7:30.

7. Make something

For hands-on fun in your own back yard, break out the hammer and nails and build a birdhouse. You can buy birdhouse kits for around $10 – $15 per kit, and have the kids make and paint their own.

8. Go to the museum

Don’t limit yourself to the Children’s Museum (although we do love them, and they do throw a great party). Explore party options at a local science museum, planetarium, Audubon Society, or natural history museum. Talk about fun places to throw a birthday party! Does it get much cooler than inviting a Red Tailed Hawk or a shooting star to your fiesta?

9. Enjoy an ice cream tour

03-the-most-fun-places-to-throw-a-birthday-partyThis might require a few cars or a rental van depending on how many kids (and adults) go on this adventure. Find three or four ice cream shops in your area and take the kids on an ice cream tour. Just make sure you bring along some nutritious snacks to counteract all that sugar. Who doesn’t love a waffle cone of homemade strawberry ice cream?

Bonus tip: Bring those sugared-up tykes to Launch to burn off some of that energy!

10. Host a birthday book swap

Inspire a love of reading in your child and you will set them on the path to success. Reading is a magical activity. Reading can teach you, transport you to another place or time, help you grow, and give you the wisdom to navigate life.

Invite your birthday party guests to bring a favorite book or two to exchange with other guests. Although libraries don’t usually make the list of fun places to throw a birthday party, we can’t help but think they might be an ideal location for a book swap party.

Whatever you decide to do, remember that the most fun places to throw a birthday party aren’t about the places, they’re about sharing joy and having fun.
